THE VOLTURNO’S FIRE.
O SAVED BY A MIRACLE. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] [United Press Association.] (Received 1.25 p.m.) London, October 12. Two boats containing forty from the Volturno have not been seen after leaving, the vessel. It is believed 110 were drowned before the Carmania’s arrival. The captain of the Volturno, at nine o’clock on Thursday night, sent the last despairing message: “Gor God’s sake, help us or we perish.” By a miracle the flames did not spread to the deck, and the sea moderated, permiting the rescue of 52. It is supposed that 36 have perished. The Carmania wirelessed: “\olturno still burning at eight o’clock on Friday night.” THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE. (Received 9.10 a.m.) Berlin, October 12.
A wireless message from the steamer Grosser Kurfurst received at Bremen states that the \olturno file was apparently caused by a violent explosion forward which killed several passengers and members of the crew.
