SMALLPOX IN SYDNEY. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright [United Press .Association.] '■ Sydney, October 2. Five fresh cases of smallpox are reported in Sydney, and there is a suspicious case at Cootamundra. PARLIAMENTARY COMMISSION. Perth, October 2. The British Parliamentary visitors arrived via the wheat districts. They were welcomed at the station by the Mayor and Council and will be entertained to-uight at dinner in Parliament House. They had a fair sample of Westralian sunshine * The temperature in the shade was 90 degrees today.
JUDGMENT FOR £SOOO.
Perth, October 1
Mr Justice McMillan gave judgment in the casa of the Willis Company against the Union Insurance Company of Canton, claiming £5280 under p policy for the insurance of goods ship ped by the.steamer Papanui, which war subsequently burned. Defendant claimed that the policy was merely a promissory warranty, subject to the declaration of the interest to their agent after the sailing of the steamer, and that plaintiffs failed to make this declaration as soon as possible. The defendant company was debarred from reinsuring as intended, consequently defendant was discharged from the performance.of the Contract. The Judge held that the stipulation as, to the declaration was not a vital portion of the contract, and gave a verdict for £5157 with costs. A stay of proceedings was granted.
NAVAL BOARD AFFAIR. (Received 9.20 a.m.) Melbourne, October 2. A sensation has been caused in defence circles owing to the Federal Executive relieving from duty Captain Onslow, second member of the Naval Board, pending an inquiry into the cases of friction amongst members of the Board. The action is regarded as a prelude to the general reconstruction of the Naval Office generally.
A FAMOUS CASE. A return tabled in the Senate shows that counsel’s fees in the' famous coal vend case totalled £17,428. Senator Bakup: “No wonder coal is dear!”

ANGLICAN SYNOD. The Anglican Synod’s proposal to establish its own insurance fund met with strong opposition in its later stages and was finally referred -to a committee to report. • .
The Synod adopted a resolution that in view, of the increased cost of living, the mimimum stipend of parish clergy be £250 and a parsonage, or £3OO without a parsonage.
VICTORIAN STATISTICS.
Melbourne, October 2
The marriages in Victoria last year numbered 11,788, which is the highest on record. The birth-rate was 26.45 per thousand, against 25.11 for previous year. The death rate was 12.25, against 11.52 in the previous year.
