ARMED MERCHANTMEN. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] [United Press Association.] London, September 29. Twenty-two merchantmen, including twelve Australian and New Zealand trade boats are now armed. It is estimated that they have a capacity of two and a. hal finillioii carcases of mutton.' LYNCH LAW. New York, September 29. ' Two drug-crazed negroes at Harriso;i, Missouri, shot up the town. Three whites, three negroes, and one degress were killed and 20 injured. The . shooting started at two in the morning ‘ and lasted till ten. After the first ’ outbreak the assailants went to the station and attacked a dtrain, killing a conductor, a flagman, and a passenger. They directed their fire on the sleeper, but no occupants were injured. The crowd lynched one of the assailants early. A second lynching ended in an affray. The rope broke, and a stronger rope was secured, and, the victim again hauled up a pole. l A jeering crowd watched the deed. The national guard hurried to the scene to prevent a racial war, POLITICAL SIGNIFICANCE.

There are present' to-day at Mr Tilings worth’s meeting at Brodrick Castle, the \ Premier, Mr' Lloyd George, Mr Runciman, Mr Churchill and Colonel Seeley. the meeting the Premier, Colopel Seeley and Ivlr Churchill proceeded to Cromarty and thence Mr Asquith went to Ba|moral Castle. Some believe that the conference related to the land question, inasmuch as Mr Birrell is .absent.
THE LAND CAMPAIGN. London, September 29. Mr J. M. Robertson (Liberal M.P. for Northumberland, Tyneside D.), speaking at Howden-on-Tyne, said the object of Mr Lloyd George’s campaign was to create 90,000 small holdings, which would involve a reform of the rating in order that the new housed and machinery would not be overbur-
dened. EXPANDING CANADA’S TRADE. (Received 12.45 p.m.) Ottawa, September 29. An official announcement has been made that a fast steamship service will be established between Halifax and St. John in the West Indies, and the cable rates will -be .halved. Mr Foster, Minister for Trajb, 'is greatly pleased , with the cpn.sximmatiup of closer trade relations with Canada and the West Indies. The Royal Mad Steam Packet Company undertakes to give a fortnightly service.
