The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1913. CERTIFICATION OF COWS.

The first report of the Victorian Government scheme of herd testing and certification of standard cows, by Mr \V. A. X. Robertson, B.Y.Sc, chief veterinary oCcer, gives the record of each certificated cow in ail herds, of which some of the cows completed! nine months' test. Up to the present the butter-fat yield (complete or in-

complete) of 180 cows is in the possession of the department, though this number comprises only eight herds of the fifteen entered, the remaining seven having commenced the test at a later period. The approximate number of cows being tested in the fifteen herds is 100. The scheme is confined to the testing of pedigreed herds of pure breeds. Representatives of most breeds have been entered, viz.. Jersey, Ayrshire, Red Poll, Shorthorn, and Dexter Kerry, and the figures already on record indicate, says Mr Robertson, that no one breed has quite

a monopoly as first-class butter-pro-j duc ers. Up to date U2 cows have completed their term, and of these all, but 17 qualified for the certificates.' Of the Avrshires 13 out of 31 failed, while 23 out of 27 Jerseys succeeded.) The best Jersey record was 7091flbj milk, average test 5.12 per cent., equal to 443*1b butter for nine mouths. The, host Ayrshire gave 7573 milk, average test 4.12 per cent., equal to, 353j1b butter; and the best Hod Toll. (38131 b milk, average test 4.09, equal, to 317 Jlb butter. I
