AN ISLAND MURDER.
A 'JAVANESE ARRESTED. The French mail steamer Dumhea, which arrived at Sydney from New Caledonia last week brought news of the murder of an Arab coachman named El Haoussine. A Javanese named Belenguen' has been arrested, and awaits his trial at Noumea. Belenguen, who was employed by a professor, M. Noellat, had previously borrowed live francs from the„ Arab, and had left his mandoline in his possession as security. On the night of the murder he called on El Haoussine, and ticked him to return the mandoline, it ia thought, for the purpose of celebrating the Javanese New Year with his friends the next day. The Arab refused, replying that he had not been paid back his five francs.
'The two were heard arguing about the money by a next-door neighbour, M. Ay march' Suddenly tli-tre was a piercing scream, fololwcd by loud moaning. M. Aymard ran in the direction of the sounds, and found El Haoussine lying in a pool of blood. The police were communicated with, and a body of men, under the commissioner and a doctor, hurried to the scone. When they arrived El Haoussine was conscious, hut was sinking rapidly ; he had been stabbed four times in the. stomach. He lived only a few minutes. The body was removed to the, Orphelinate depot. Belenguen was arrested early the following morning.
