CROW’S NEST TRAGEDY

A fire at Alexandria destroyed five weather-board pottages and damaged ' two others. 'Hie inmates, who were asleep, escaped scantily clad. They managed to save some of their belongings. 'V . ~ ! The Farmers’ Bacon Factory at Ballarat, the last one of the most extensive establishments of the kind in Australia ,was completely destroyed by fire. The loss was over L. Thieves removed many hams and sides of bacon during the fire.

Four of the Empire Parliamentarians were admitted to the Commonwealth bar in the High Court, Mr Barton presiding. “*0 TIME £OR SHOOTING.” Fremantle, September 2d. Cutler, a member of the Commonwealth rifle team at Bieley has arrived. He considers that the standard of shots is higher in Australia than in England.. The trouble in England Seemed to be the raising of men, for the sports clubs did not receive much support from the Government and very little encouragement from the newspapers. “Would you believe it,” he said, “the papers make no end of a row about golf and other things of no earthly use, but when it comes to rifle shooting, which is of some practical benefit to the country, they have no time for it.” THE COMMONWEALTH BANK. (Received 9.30 a.m.) Melbourne, September '25. The balance-sheet of the Commonwealth Bank for the half year ending June 30 shows a loss of £32,030. The assets amount to £5,008,744, and the liabilities to £5,055,381, Sydney, September 25. A boiler at the Gasford sawmills exploded, killing instantly Edward Davis (engineer), and a mill hand named Higgs was scalded and died.
