FOOTBALL. A TEAM FOR AUSTRALIA. [Per Press Association.] Wellington, September 23. At a meeting of the Council ot the New Zealand Football Association, a letter was received from the New South Wales Football Association stating that it would consider the question of a visit from a New Zealand team next month and report the decision at once. Jt was decided to write to all the Associations in New Zealand, asking them if they will favorably consider receiving an Australian team to tour New Zealand next season. Mr It. Brown, of Dunedin, was appointed referee for the AucklandCanterbury Brown Shield match next Saturday.
THE LEAGUE CAME. AUCKLAND v. TARANAKI. Notwithstanding the severe drubbing which the northern province inflicted on Taranaki at the first meeting this year the match to be played on the Recreation Grounds, New Plymouth, to-morrow should be an exhibition of bright, sparkling football. It must be remembered that Taranaki, with practically no knowledge of each other's play and coming straight from a rough sea journey, were at their worst when they met the New Zealand League Challenge Cup holders in Auckland some months back, and since then they have played several rep. matches, the principal one being against the Australian Welshmen, where they did more than was expected of them. The Aucklanders arrived by the Rarawa on Tuesday morning. The teams are as follows: Auckland.— Full-back, Mansill; three-quarters, G. Cooke, F. Woodward, Clarke; five-eighths, Tobin, McClymont; half-back, Webb; forwards, Manning, Flicker, Rukutai, Mitchell, Walters, and Denize. Taranaki.— Full-back, Malone ; three-quarters, Hooker, Toekor, Fitzgerald, and Robinson; halves, Nicholls and Moir; forwards, Phillips, Osborne, King, Rich, Martis, and Kyle. Emergencies: Back, Gredig; forward, Gernhoefer. Mr G. Seagar will referee. The Auckland team travel to Wellington, where they play that province on Saturday.
HOCKEY. The Stratford Girls' Hockey Club played New Plymouth Technical College at Stratford yesterday, defeating the visitors by 5 points to nil. The score was made by Miss Milly Curtis, who gained five goals. Mr A. Wheeler acted as referee.
