CONDEMNEL STOCK. [Pub Pef,s3 Association.] Christchurch, September 22. The recently-formed Wholesale Dairymen's Association, has »<Jgcided that the committee should take the earliest opportunity of. placing before the Government the necessity for increasing the compensation paid _ toi stock condemned, and also for raising the age of stock in respect to which compensation is payable from eight to twelve year 3.
PERTURBED JEWELLERS. Invercargill, September 22. The estimate of the loss through burglary at Arthur's jewellery shop has been reduced to £214. The booty consisted principally of rings, chains, watches, broodies and bangles and could easily have been carried away in a man's pocket*, Arthur only recently purchased about £dUU worth of stock, and tins was what was drawn on by the burglar. The police are of the opinion that the crime was committed by a man who was well acquainted with the interior arrangements of the shop. Other jewellers in the town are rather pertrubed over the affair, and to-day a number had the bolts, and locks on their shops overhauled and strengthened.
THE WRECKED DEVON. Wellington, September 22.
Another complete underwater survey of the wrecked steamer Devon is now being carried out by representatives of Lloyds, and on their report will depend'the disposal of the vessel, which appears to be holding together well.
AMBULANCE WORK
Timaru, September 22
Four squads of the nursing division of the St. John Ambulance Association, two from Christchurch and two from Timaru, competed to-day for ,the Wells shield in the first aid transport home-nursing (six classes of work). . The result, was: Timaru A 580 marks, Christchurch B, 578, Timaru 8.558, Christchurch A 534. I)ur,ing the day a conference of officers !was held to settle a dispute regarding the ownership and control of the ambulance hall erected in Timaru, which has been idle since the formal opening *ome i months ago, owing to differemvs of.opinion on those points. As a result of the meeting it is promisecßhat'there'will be a prompt setBorough Council, as trustees, amicable arrangement jj regarding a joint committee of management and the joint collection of the necessary funds. ■. ■; , ~..

UNION COMPANY'S ENTERPRISE Dunedin, September 22.
Enquiries from headquarters concerning the statement in the Sydney shipping list that the Union Company intended calling for tenders shortly for two passenger steamers for the Pacific trade elicited the information that tenders for the steamers were called, but for what trade is not being disclosed at present.
