At the trial of the men concerned in the theft of the pearl necklace, Quadradstein, cross-examined, said he had known Gutwirth for five months, and had secured his confidence in connection with the necklace by pretending that he had sold stolen property previously. Quadradstein denied that his first intention was to buy the necklace, and that when he saw the pearls lit concluded the matter was too difficult to negotiate, and decided that it was safer to earn the reward. He interviewed the prisoners in a locked bedroom. Quadradstein and Brandstatter carried loaded revolvers. He die not know if Grizzard and Silverman were armed. He did not hold the men in the bedroom, but afterwards regretted that he had allowed the necklace to go.
