A CRITICAL SITUATION

General Smuts, interviewed, said that he and his colleagues were not aware until now that the strike leaders had negotiated with arms concealed on them and were prepared to Commit murder. He added that while Mr Lain and Mr Matthews were, addressing the crowd from a hotel balcony the police arrived with levelled rifles. The Minister was very anxious for several moments, until Inspectoi Truter, hurrying to the balcony, saved the situation by countermanding the police.
CONFERENCE ABANDONED. (Received 10.35 a.in.) ' Johannesburg, September 17. The proposed round-the-table conference of mine-owners and miners’ representatives was abandoned owing to the Federation of Trades Union. l desiring to participate.
CONTEMPT OF COURT (Received 11.50 a.in.)
Johannesburg, September 17
Five members of the Labour Party were prosecuted for contempt of court in connection with the recent speeches. George Kendall was fined £SO or a month’s imprisonment, and Crawford £25 or a fortnight. Morgan and Livingstone apologised, and were discharged. Campbell was acquitted.
