THE CHANNEL TUNNEL

The Times' military correspondent maintains that the commercial advantages of the Channel tunnel are outweighed by tiie national risks. It' any country conquered England, the cession of the tunnel might form part of the conditions of peace. Its recovery would bo impossible, and England would bo permanently enslaved.
TITANIC CLAIMS.
London, September 15
The claims in connection with the wreck of the Titanic 1 total £3,370,072.
USES OF UNIVERSITIES.
At the British Association, Sir Alfred Hopkinson, commenting on the modern university, said he hoped to get rid of the pestilential heresy that Universities existed merely to give degrees. We should remember that their function was to train men and women in commerce and industry as well as in professions.
THE S.S. WHAKATANE ASHORE
Quebec, September 15
The steamer Whakatane collided with the wharf on entering the Harbor and drifted ashore. Her position is not. dangerous, and it is expected she will soon be floated.
TONCAN ISLANDS DISAPPEAR.
Frisco, September 15
The steamer Sonoma reports that Falcon ami Hope Islands in the Tonga group have disappeared. Several hundred natives and a few whites were killed. Presumably there was a violent earthquake.
WOMEN IN MODERN DRESS.
Xew York, September 15
Three women created a sensation at Pittsburg by parading the streets in latticed skirts, which were slit to the knee and wcaiihg fiesb-colored stockings. TJie police dispersed the crowd and assisted the women to escape i"n a taxi.
THE OLYMPIC CAMES.
London, September 15
The Duke of Westminster has assumed complete control of the Olympic Fund. He has invited Mr Hugh Mcintosh to assist in outlining a scheme of organisation.
THE PACIFIC CABLE.
London, September 15
The Pacific Cable Board is not appointing a new manager, but lias promoted the accountant to the position cf secretary, believing that the administration in London is purely clerical. Mr Milward will return to Australia. , The Board entertains little hopes of laying a British cable acros.-, the Atlautic.
THE CHANNEL SWIM.
London, September 15
Holbein again attempted to swim the English Channel. He entered the water at 12.55 in the morning, and swam till five o'clock. A heavy wind and a nasty sea caused the abandonment of the attempt.
PRETORIA EXHIBITION.
London, September 15
South Africa is negotiating with the Prince of Wales to open the Government B"iJdings at Pretoria in October. 191-t. He will probably subsequently visit Australia.
DEMAND FOR BANNED NOVELS.

There js an enormous demand for the two novels recently banned by Hio libraries.
SPAIN'S AMBITIONS

The Republican'journal, The Leader, assorts that Spain is joining the entente, sharing a sinister plan to seize the Portuguese colonies.
