LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The School ' Committee meets this evening. The spring flower social advertised to take place.in St, Andrew's schoolroom on Thursday evening has been postponed to' a date to be lixed. In- all probability the local pipers will turn out to-night to play McEwen to the Town Hall. Last night the sky was beautifully clear, enabling a fine view of the eclipse of the moon to be obtained. The postponed sweepstake shooting match; under the auspices of the Eltham Gun Club, takes place on Thursday next, at Mr J. L. Campbell's, at 1 p.m. Toklay is the eighth anniversary of the High Commissioner's cablegram to the late Right Hon. It. J. Seddon, which conveyed the news that the New Zealand team had gained a decisive victory over Devon County by 55 points to 4. In preparation for the Fire Brigade's forthcoming juvenile ball, a practice for, children will be held tomorrow afternoon at the station. Mrs Mcßeth has consented to train the chilren, and the committee would appreciate the presence of other ladies at the practice. The show to bo held in the Town Hall on Thursday under the auspices of the Horticultural Society promises to be the most successful yet held by the Society, A largo number of entries are assured, and everything has been done to make the show attractive to the public. In the evening a tine programme of musical selections will bo given by "a full orchestra.

Mr W. Birdling informs the Waitara Mail that the Hereford cattle purehasetd by a southern buyer and shipped to Christchurch, had a rough trip down, and five of the beasts had to be (submitted to auction in consequence of the knocking 'about they received. Despite this, they killed well. One of a pair of five-year olds weighed 1756 lbs, and realised £26 10s, inclusive of the hide, which represented a total of 1931b5, bringing £4 10s. This giver, an indication of the condition of the cattle, and had the transhipment been done 'under normal conditions, the whole lot would probably have readied near these figures. The others, apparently suffered worse, and four of them aevraged £l3, while one Shorthorn heifer, a valuable beast, brought £ll ss. The purchaser is keeping seven for show purposes, and we have no doubt about them keeping up the credit of the Kianganui property,

For some reason or another (states the Waitara Mail) there seems to be a larger quantity of drifting sand along the sea-coast of this part of the North Island than has been before known. In all probability the quantity has been gradually increasing for years, since, in fact, the bush has been cleared from the banks of the streams. Previously the sand was held up by the scruh, but now it is carried freely into the streams, and from Foxton upwards, one hears the , cry of shallowing rivers and bars. The , trouble is also being experienced in a marked manner at the New Plyi mouth breakwater.
