Dunedin, September 13
New Zealand and Australia me here in the second teset match to-day in the presence of dose on 15, (Xk spectators. The match was playec. on tlie Carisbrook ground, which wa; just a trifle heavy. Though the morn ing was line, the afternoon broke cok. and dull overhead, the cold increasing in intensity as the afternoon wore on. Though the play'could hardly b< said to have reached what might b: called an international standard, i; was, throughout, fast and exciting Until New Zealand established its lead in the second spell the issue looked like an open game. In the earlj •stages the Australian backs showed up to much better advantage than the All Blacks, who, apparently, lack ed combination and failed to "warm up" until the game had been in progress for some time.
Australia opened their scoring account sixteen minutes after play started, Sutton getting over. • The kick failed. Soon afterwards O'Leary (New Zealand) potted a fine goal from about half way. New Zealand's score was; increased to nine by "Wilson scoring, O'Leary converting. The first spell ended with the score at nine to eight in favor of New Zealand, Jones scoring a try for Australia, which was converted; .by Simpson. After four minutes' play in, the second spell Taylor scored a try for New Zealand, the major points being added. The aggregates were then once more puleld together by Jones scoring a try (converted) for the visitors, the score then standing at fourteen to thirteen in favour of the home team. A PROPOSED CONTEST,
lUNFURLY SHIELD v. SEDDON SHIELD.
Westport, September 13
It is commented on as a 1 strange coincidence that the Ranfurly Shield. Cielcl iiy Auckland with a break qf only one year since the incpetion o. ; ' the shield matches, and the Secldor. Shield, held likewise by Marlborough. should both have changed hands tin: year, Taranaki and Buller being the .successful challengers in the respective cases. It is suggested that a match between the two shield-holders, on neutral ground, say Wellington, would prove interesting.
