JERSEY BREEDERS.

THE STRATFORD BRANCH.

THE ANNUAL MEETINC

The annual meeting of members of tho Stratford branch of the New Zealand Jersey Breeders' Association was held on. Saturday afternoon. Mr J. I). Healy presided.

REPORT AND BALANCE-SHEET. Tho following report was presented: —The committee of the Stratford branch of the New Zealand Jersey Breeders' Association have much pleasure iii submitting the report and bal-ance-sheet for the year ending August 31st, 1913. The membership is keeping up to normal, and the interest is evidently still maintained in the working of the branch. During the year a number of animals were imported from the .Jersey Islands, and we are pleased to state that a large proportion came -to Taranaki, and the greatest number imported were brought out by Mr R. J). Harkness, and we regret that he is not hero to-day to give us an account of his experiences in the Islands. These animals are now in quarantine and will probably be delivered In the district next week. Two have been purchased by Mr E. J. Kirkwood and two by Mr W. V. Harkness. The balance-sheet showed a cash credit of 2s 3d, with £2 outstanding in subscriptions. Mr Healy, in moving the adoption of the report, said that although the membership had not increased, the number had only gone down by a few who had left the district. There were a number of breeders who would be joining later on. He strongly advised all members to have all their cowi> tested. .

NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL-. Notification was read of the election of the following to form the New Zealand Council:—Messrs Wilkinson (Auckland), Hall (South Auckland), Linn, Harkncss (Taranaki). McKenzie. (Manawatu), Booth (Wairarapa), and Watson (South Island).

COMMITTEE. , The following, committee was elected :—Messrs J. T. Belcher ('chairman), J. Shotter, J. D. Heaiy, W. Saywell. IJ. Dingle, and E. J. Kirkwood.

YEARLY. SUBSCRIPTION. Mr Shotter brought up the question 'of subscription. He thought the. subscription to the head Association was too heavy. The head body should not amass money, but i should make. the subscription less, thereby helping the bredd.*'

Mr Healy said it was hardly fair to ask the head body to pay for the branches. ■"" :. •:,■: -us

A. AND B. ASSOCIATION

The matter of a donation to the A. and P. Association was discussed. The secretary stated that there was no funds in hand, and that any donation would have to be raised by levy. The opinion was expressed that the Jersey breeders should not be called on for a separate donation, as most of them made donations to the A. and P. Association otherwise.

Mr Healy thought it would be unwise to drop the donation altogether. and suggested that a gold medal be given.

Mr Dingle was not in favor of a levy. Members had already done sufficient. He would be quite agreeable to a donation if the money was in hand. He presumed all present were giving a weaner" calf to the A. and P. Association, which was equal to a levy of i pound or thirty shillings. There were those farmers who had given a calf and money in addition, but as far as he personally was concerned he had given them all the money this year that be thought he should.

Mr Watkin said it was desired to keep the breed before the public. Mr 'Dingle suggested that big breeders might make private donations.

Mr Shotter suggested that breeders might give trophies for animals from their stock. Mr Watkin moved that a trophy valu'ed at two guineas be provided out of the Association's funds. This wa? seconded by Mr Mealy and carried. It was decided that the trophy be given for the best yearling heifer.

COUNCIL DELEGATES

Mr Dingle moved that Mr Harkness be written to and be informed that members were desirous that he should attend the meetings of the branch. He said the Taranaki members of the Council should attend the meet-

ings of the branch and give some idea of what the head body is doing, lie was sure members were losing interest throtight not haying this information. Ho had nothing personally against Mr Harkness, but certainly thought his presence at branch meet-

in g« was important. Mi 1 Shotter said Mr Linn would also attend if he were notified of the time of meeting. He (Mr Shotter) thought it would be advisable to have both members present.

Mr Saywell said ii might suffice if the delegates to the Council handed a report of proceedings to the press.

The motion was carried. On Mr Shottor's motion it was de cided that Mr Linn lie similarly noli fied.
