CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting or the Chan 1 bor of Commerce was held last night Present: Messrs J. B. Richards (pre?' dent), W. L. Kennedy, W. H. T Young, W. P. Kirkwood, R. Master: ]). J-= Malone, S. H. James, and th'secretary (Mr W. A. Hewitt). The Commissioner of Crown Lane!: wrote that the representations to have section 19, block J, Mahoe, changed from a forest reserve to v. scenic reserve would be duly considered. i The Minister for Railways, in a note 'to Mr J. B. Hine, M.P., wrote that Ithe Chamber's representations urgling that the junction of the Opunako line should be at Stratford would be ! considered and he would submit the 'particulars supplied to the responsible I officers for a report. I The Minister of Railways acknowledged receipt of representations regarding dangerous railway level crossings, and stated that the railway engineers in each district were preparing reports regarding the crossing in thendistricts, and that when these reports were received the whole question would be fully gone into. The Napier Chamber asked for the Chamber's co-operation in urging on the Government that in the case ol Maori debtors who have rents coming to them the rents might be attached to pay the debts—Mr Young moved that the movement be endorsed.—Mr Kirkwood said that he could not support the motion, as he thought the Maori was a person of a peculiar temperament and needed protecting against himself—Mr Masters thought the Chamber should not pass the motion, leaving the matter to those bodies which were particularly interested.—The president pointed out that the amendment would not mean that trie native's capital would be attacked.—Mr Masters thought things would be better i F debts were not recoverable in the Courts. At present credit was given in doubtful cases merely because tradespeople kne* they 'could recover the amount in Court if payment was not duly made. The motion was carried.
