A BOLD THEFT

A bold theft is reported at the Commercial Hotel by which the licensee was robbed of £SO. It appears that the safe in which, the money was kept was left open during the time the theft took place, the thief appropriating the gold and leaving the bank note;, untouched.

Arthur Harding, a son of the la'ti Mr John Harding, of Mount Vernoi Estate, Hawke's Bay, was drowneo on Sunday afternoon in the Orua wharo River, near Port Albert, undei distressing, circumstances. recently purchased several thousane acres of land liaving a frontage to th< Oruawharo River, and on Sunday, i) company with his wife and son, li crossed the river in an oil-launch t< visit some neighbors. The weathei was stormy, but nothing untowarc happened until the return journey hac nearly been completed. The launch had nearly reached the wharf on de coased's property, when he fel! over hoard. His son gallantly jumpec into the water, and swimming som< distance, caught hold of his father and got him safely to the shore. The launch, meantime, was drifting awav with Mrs Harding, and the son swam after it, and with difficulty got in the launch. Harding was then seen floating towards the launch. His wife *nd son caught hold of his coat, but were unable to pull him into the launch. He towed his father hack to the wharf, but Harding had by this time expired. The son is a youth of 17 years of age He is a powerful swimmer, and was in the water about an hour. The inquest was held yesterday, and a verdict of "Accidentally drowned" was returned.
