The Democrats sustained a heavy defeat, the Republicans selecting Speaker Peters as a Congressman from the third district. In Maine there was a large majority over the Democratic candidate. President Wilson received an overwhelming vote in the same district during the Presidential election.
Washington, September 9
The Senate is sitting all night in the hope of passing the UnderwoodSimmons tariff. Senator Lafolette introduced amendments for free wool proposing smaller reductions than the Democrats. The Senate has passed the free sugar schedule. It will become effective in 1916.
