New Zealand was played at Athletic Park on Saturday, and resulted in. ail easy win for the local team, who on heavy ground, were superior at practically all points. Four .spells of twenty minutes each were played. New . Zealand led by 11 to 5, at half time, the Blacks adapting themselves better to the disagreeable conditions. The visitors played fqur three-quarters and two halves, but on the day and ground .the/,value, of . such combination was not discernible. The Australians managed to cross the New Zealand line but once. .All through the second spell the visitors were hemmed in. Tries came in .quick succession. Towards the end Australia faded right out, and when the final bell rang the scores, 1 wore New Zealand :30, Australia 5.

CANTERBURY DEFEATS WEST COAST. Greymouth, September 7. The representative match between Canterbury and West Coast was played hero .to-day,, and after, a hard game Canterbury won by 20 to 5.
OTAGO BEAT W AIR ARAB A. Dunedin, September 7. Wairarapa played Otago hero to-, day .under ideal conditions. Taken as a whole the game, though fairly fast, was never brilliant, and often failed to arouse any enthusiasm at all from tho spectators, and the day went to Otago, who defeated the visitors by 14 to 6. WELLINGTON: REFEATS MARLBOROUGH. Blenheim, September 7. The match Wellington v. Marlborough was played to-day. At half time the scores were five points each. Tho game ended: Wellington 15, Marlborough 5. THE LEAGUE CAME. FIRST TEST MATCH. Auckland, September 7. Tho first test match under League rules was played to-day, New South Wales beating New Zealand by 33 points to 13. About'2o,ooo spectators watched the’game,- which in the first half was in favour of New Zealand, who had the wind. New South Wales had the game all on their own in the second half. WELLINGTON DEFEATS WANGANUI. Palmerston, September-T. The Wanganui v. Wellington match was played here on Saturday and resulted in an easy win for Wellington by 26 points to 6. Rain fell all the afternoon and the ground was in a slippery condition. THE ASSOCI ATIQN CAME. CANTERBURY BEATS MANAWATU. Christchurch, September 7. In bright weather but on a ground that was heavy after the night’s rain, the first challenge match for the Brown Shield since the Canterbury team recovered it from Wellington, was played at Lancaster Park, when the Mannwatu Association football team met Canterbury. The Canterbury team was, found to be superior in all branches of the game and won by 8 goals to nil.
