A PAINFUL ACCIDENT. [Pkr Press Association.-) Christchurch, September 5. A man named John Lamont, a resident of Darfield, met with a painful accident. While walking homo aiong the railway line from Coalgate last evening, his foot caught in some points' and he fell in the trench, breaking his leg. Early in Tuesday morning while proc< • Jing to work, a sawmill hand, named Robert Poultney discovered the body of a woman lying dead beside some scrub on the Houipapa road at Catlins. Investigation proved that it was the body of Mrs Wm. Johnston, or Houipapa. On the previous evening Mrs Johnston was canvassing in aid of church funds, and on making her way borne had evidently fainted and Kuocumbed. At the inquest a verdict was returned that death was the result of exposure caused by a fainting fit rendering the deceased incapable of getting assistance. KILLED WHILE RIDING. Constable Wade; of Eltham, received information yesterday that a lad named Johns, 14 years of age, son of Mr L. W. Johns, Awatune, East, was killed on -Thursday. The deceased had been riding a horse which bolted, and threw him from his seat in the saddle, but his foot held to the stirrup and he was dragged for some distance and was badly injured. He died shortly after being picked up.
