The death of Mr. Andrew Kelly, a member of the New South Wales Assembly is announced from Sydney.
Takapuna lias elected Mr Ewen William Alison as its first Mayor, who defeated Mr George George by 73 votes. Mr Geo. .1). McKenzie, who has for a number of years been licensee of the Manaia Hotel, has sold the business to a Mr Christenscn, of Wellington. Mr Gordon E. S. McMinn, late oi Palmerston North, has been appointed manager of the Tribune Publishing Company (Victoria's leading Catbobc weekly). ,
Mr Frank Foster, formerly a school teacher in South Taranaki, has been engaged as principal tenor of the Carl Rosa Company (European) for a period of three years. Mr E. Jones, of the local railway platform staff for two years, has been promoted to he signalman at To Kuili, and leaves for the scene oi his new duties on Monday. Mr Butler, from Wanganui, fills the vacancy.
The Nelson Hospital Board yesterday appointed Miss Julia S. Murray, of Wellington, and formerly of London, to the position of Matron at the Nelson hospital. There were eleven applicants from various parts of the Dominoin.
The Rev. Cyril Hopper, vicar of St. John's. Newcastle (England), since 190 G, and well known to many New Zealanders as a member of the Anglican General Mission of 1910, has been appointed; Diocesan Missioner to the Bishop of Winchester.
The death occurred on Monday of Mrs K. M. Hies, of Awaraki, mother to Pastor Hies, of Dannevirke. The late Mrs Hies was brought out from England by her son is 1890, and had resided in the Dannevirke district for twenty-one years. She was eighty years of age.
Mr J. Strauclian, Under-Secretary for Lands, is to retire from the Public Service on March 31, 1911. This will mean, under the usual arrangement regarding three months' leave of absence on full pay, that Mr Strauclian will terminate active duties at the end of this year. Mr J. Lomas, Secretary for Labor, retires at the same time as Mr Strauclian.
Sir Arthur Douglas, who was referred to in the cable concerning the collision of the Aberdeen and Glasgow expresses, lived for many years in New Zealand. Latterly he held tin position of Under-Secretary for Defence, and had previously been a lieutenant in the Iloyal Navy. He is the fifth holder of the baronetcy, winch was created in 1777. Sir Arthur was born in 1815.
Miss Dergman,'of Danhevirke, who has been in Stratford for some months past, was yesterday given a kitchen party at the residence of Mrs J. W. Boon, Regan Street. A very enjoyable afternoon was spent with songs, reei tations, pianoforte solos, and competitions. There were about 10 guests present, including Mrs J. W. Boon, of New Plymouth. Mrs Dergman, who is to bo married shortly, is leaving fo: her homo on Monday. ,
Raouf Bey, commander of the Turkish warship Hamidieh, which sunk six Greek ships besides doing great damage to island and coast fortifications during the height of the Balkan war is only twenty-six, speaks English perfectly, artd is said to be more American than Turkish in ideas. He has visited ' America, several times to study naval tactics. The Earl of Chichester, the done of an interesting autograph of Oliver Cromwell to the Brighton Municipal Museum, is a Sussex man. He is r descendant of Cromwell, a distinction which can be claimed by a good many other people, and among others by Lord Bipon and two Yorkshire baronets, Sir Frederick Frankland and Sir ■William Worsley. All four are descendants through the great Lord Protector's'youngest daughter Frances.

Field-Marshal Lord Roberts' has also sat to the same artist. Mri Lander is a brother of Mr W, Lander, of Stratford.
