A SUSPECT ON THE PERSIC.
(Received 9.50 a.m.) Melbourne, September 2. A steward aboard the steamer Per*ic, from Sydney, developed suspected smallpox and precautions were adopt ed.

The Deputy Chief Health Officer issued the following smallpox bulletin at 5 p.m. to-day The District Health Officer at Auckland (Dr. Monk) reports that no fresh cases have occurred in Auckland city or suburbs, and nothing has been reported from the North of Auckland. South Waikato district haa reported about clear. Reports from North Waikato are also good.
Auckland, September 2
The number of patients in the isolation hospital has been reduced to twenty-six. Reports from country districts are all reassuring. Waikato, Taumarunui, Te Awamutu report all clear. In Huntly there have been no new cases for six weeks.
Dr. Buck reports from Kaikohe that all is well. The medical students arc distributing themselves throughout the native settlements.
