o NORFOLK ISLAND. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright! [United Press Association.! (Received 9.3.; a.m.) Melbourne, September 2. The Government is introducing a Rill in the current week authorising the Commonwealth to take over Norfolk Island, N.S.W. WHEAT FIELDS. (Received 9.50 a.m.) Sydney, September 2. The Government Statistician estimates that the area sown in wheat for the current season is 3,731,000 acres, an increase of 763,098 compared with the previous season. It is anticipated that 3,136,000 acres' will be reaped for grain ami 59-1,450 cut for hay. “THE SLAUGHTERED INNOCENTS.” It is undeystood that the Government intends to abandon a considerable number of measures. The session will probably close before the end of the month. CARLE REFORMS. Melbourne, September 2. Returns show that the week-mid and deferred cable systems are being extensively availed of, particularly by the press. MISSION WORK IN PAPUA. Brisbane, September 2. Bishop Sharp has returned from a visit to Papua. He states that mission work is progressing steadily, the Anglican Church having three thousand converts in Papua. i
