SOUTH AFRICAN POLITICS.

THE TARIFF QUESTION

[By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] [United Press Association.]

Capetown, August 30

Preferential tariff in favor of Britain is in jeopardy and is likely to he scrapped. The Customs authorities complain of the quantities of Continental goods smuggled in as British. Mr Burton Fischer, who is consulting the Imperial Government regarding the naval policy, hinted that preference would be possibly dropped.

The Ons Land says that the suggestion that a large increase in British goods will provide funds for a navy is an erroneous assumption. Half a million of rebates on British goods will go into the pockets of the Home manufacturers. A fear is expressed in some circles that the Go. vernment will make the Navy an excuse for abolishing preference and then discover that the extra Customs revenue must be devoted for lan 1, defence or other local purposes.
