The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. SATURDAY, AUGUST 30, 1913. THE INVISIBLE COWN.
Tlic , "invisible gown" which, according to a cable message a few days ago i*> a feature of the French sea-side modes this season, gives colour to the London "Times' " allegation that "an
orgie of undressing" is going on 'amongst modern Women. A campaign (gainst some of these latest freaks of fashion in women's dress has been proceeding for some time, and the "Times" laments that five years ago .vomon wore skirts and bodices which covered them, stockings thick enough not to show the colour of their skin, and sufficient stays and petticoats to conceal the details of their persons. The wasp waist no longer existed, nor was there any hump on the skirt or on the shoulders. "But," it goes ')i to say, "human beings are never satisfied to remain stationary, and the men and women who direct the fashions in Paris soon found that the nature to which they had returned was not natural enough; that, in short, more clothes could be dispensed with and a greater air of liberty given to the limbs. There is an orgie of
undressing going on and it shows no signs of abating. What is to be the end? It is difficult to see; but obviously, when you have gone on undressing for a certain time you com« j to the end of what there is to take off, and the only thing to do is to put your clothes on again. But no one can foresee when that happy hour of sanity will be with us. There are no signs of it at present." Possibly,
however, the very boldness of the invisible gown may lead to saner behaviour. Flesh-coloured stockings and tights, with a dress lined with material to match the colour of tbe wearer's Iskin, are hardly likely to become 'popular wear.
