AMUSEMENTS.

THE ELLWOOD TRIO. The southern papers are loud in their praises of the Ellwoods, who arc to appear here nn 4th September. One journal speaks as follows:- The Opera House was packed to its utmost capacity, the occasion being the re-appearance of the Elhvood Trio and John Prouse. The praises that have been showered on this talented company have not been too lavish and the entertainment was first-class. The audience was enthusiastic, and like Oliver Twist, wanted more, so' that nearly every item was encored. George Elhvood is a master on the cello, his tone leaving nothing to be desired, while he is clever and throws his whole soul into his work, playing with great feeling, and the most difficult music seems to come easy to him. His brother Harry on the violin in just as expert and his numbers are very pleasing. He too has been born with a soul for the music. Miss Ellwood officiated at the piano with great credit, while that fine baritone singer, Mr John Prouse, is at his best and the audience could not get enough of him. All lovers of music should not miss this opportunity of hearing this fine company. The prices are 3s, 2s and Is. The box plan is at Grubb's.

HIS MAJESTY'S PICTURES. Last night's change of pictures at Bernard's proved a gigantic success, and was witnessed by a fairly large audience. The star film, "A Hidlen Message," was to the fore in legitimate sensation, and undoubtedly is a most expensive production. True to detail, Ceylon (the pearl of the Orient), is a magnificent colored scenic offering by Pathe. "White Gazelle's Error," an Indian cowboy drama, by tbe New Chicago Co., is very clear and up to date with good acting and thrilling incidents throughout. "Coney Island," the popular New York pleasure resort, is the funniest of the funny surroundings for a scenario of the comedy produced. The remainder of the programme introduces the Gaumont Graphic, which is a revelation of the world's current topics, and a host of dramatic and comic gems tend to make a most enjoyable evening. Tonight tho amateur trials for comic recitations will take place, when seven local performers, including one lady

and a boy, will participate in the mirth-provoking programme. The usual big money prizes will be given.
