Mr Cann anticipates that the new taxation will produce three-quarter;-of a million of revenue. The proposals however, are contingent upon the pro. sent Government surviving the elections. They will noo be enforced dur ing the live of the present Parliament

CLOSER SETTLEMENT BILL

(Received 9.25 a.m.) Sydney, August 29. In the Assembly the Closer Settlement Bill passed its second reading. The Bill provides for declaring certaii. areas within fifteen miles of a railway or thirty miles of the river Murray to be landlocked areas, and unless the owners cultivate certain area in ;. certain time a tax will be imposed. Tin Hill also provides facilities for cutting up estates by providing for payment by Treasury bills at four per cent., and also provides for annual payment*--by the settler, which sums will be collected by the Government and paii' to the vendor, the Government issu ing negotiable certificates for the amount of purchase.
