Obituary: Leopold Hoffer, the great authority on chess.—London cable. Hickory Wood, the pantomime librettist, is dead.—London cablo. Mr P. Skoglund,, town clerk, rrived'back in Stratford last night by the mail train, after a short holiday tor the benefit of his health. 1 The death occurred in Melbourne on Wednesday of last week at the Convent of the Little Sisters of the | Poor, in his 80th year, of James Boss, who, in 1836, as a child of 2i years, 'accompanied John Batman in his his- | toric voyage from Tasmania to the site |on which Melbourne was subsequently built. Miss Jessis Wilson, daughter of the United States President, was found by a passing doctor unconscious on the roadside. She was riding with her fiance, and was thrown from her horse. Her fiance was some distance ahead, and did not notice the accident until the girl's riderless horse passed him. Her condition is not believed to be serious. Mr J. W. Bright, Inspector of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. Ltd., who is on a tour of inspection of the Company's branches, is at present engaged in inspecting the work of the Stratford Agency. Mr Bright, who is accompanied by Mrs Bright, is staying at the County Hotel.

Mr FT. C. Valintine, who is wellknown to many of our readers in al parts of Taranaki, where he lias foi years been a prominent farmer, has just joined Messrs Webster, Dobson and Co., with the object of talc .ing charge of the firm's Land Department. Mr Valintine ought to be ex ceptionally well qualified for tin business he is now entering upon, as in addition to being a practical farmer, he knows Taranaki thoroughly having in the early days been asso ciated with the survey of much o this province.

Mr Maybriek, the musical composer whose death was reported the othc day, was born at Liverpool in 1844 and educated at Liverpool, Milan, anC Leipsig. After studying in Italy and Germany he apeared as a baritone vocalist in all the leading London an. provincial concerts, and also in Eng lish opera, etc., for many years. H« also became popular as a writer o' songs, etc., under the name of Stepher Adams. He was a vice-president o' Trinity College, London. He was fiv, times Mayor of Rydc. His songs include "Nancy Lee," "The Midship mite,'.'/'Alsatian Mountains," "Stai of Bethlehem," "The Little Hero,' "The Holy City," "A Warrior Bold,'' "Valley by the Sea," "Children of tin City," "fhora," "Long Livo the King," etc.
