TRAIN COLLISION. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] [United Press Association.] Brisbane, August 21. Shortly after midnight a railway collision occurred at Aldershot. While a goods train from Rockhampton was steanding at the station, a special carrying sugar-cane from the Pialba branch line crashed into it. The brakevan of the stationary train was smashed. The engine of the other train was derailed, and six of its wagons wore smashed. Although the Pialba train had AVcstinghouse brakes, the driver states that they failed to act. The passengers of both trains were merely shocked.

THE CORAL ISLANDS. Sydney, August 21. An American scientific expedition has arrived, going to Groat Barrier Reef to work on the coral reef animals, under the auspices of the Carnegie Institution, of Washington, under the charge of Dr. Mayer. Among the subjects investigated will be phosphorescence in the animal embryology of sea-urchins and star fishes, and the relationship between the salt of the sea-water and the rate of transmission, of impulses by nerves. AUSTRALIAN STEAMER SERVICE Sydney, August 21. When tire Maunganui reaches Sydney on September 2, instead of returning to Wellington she will go to Melbourne, whence she will sail for the Bluff on September 10, replacing the Moeraki. The Manuka, which is due in Sydney on Tuesday, from Wellington, will return only as far as Lyttelton. The only boat from Sydney to New Zealand on September G will be the Willochra, from ’Frisco, via Wellington.
