HEAVY PENALTIES.

BREACHES OF CUSTOMS ACT. Melbourne, August 2. Heavy penalties were asked for in a case which came before Mr Justice Isaacs on a motion for judgment. The defendant was John C. Minder, of Melbourne, importer, and it was charged against him that he was guilty of offences described in section 231 of the Customs Act in connection with the importation of goods. Four shipments were involved, and no fewer than 32 offences were charged against Winder. The first ‘shipment reached Melbourne in November, 1910, the value of the goods being £ll6 8s 9d. The other shipments came to hand last year, as follows: —May 16, value of goods £391 15s, lOd; May 17, value £203 2s 8d; August 28, value £lO2 8s 4d. Mr Mann (instructed by the Federal Crown Solicitor) asked his Honor for o declaration that Winder had been guilty of the offences' charged against him, and for a penalty of six times the value of the goods in respect of each offence. His Honor made the declaration asked for, and signed judgment for penalties amounting to £4900 13s 6d.
