Desperate, though unscientific fighting, consisting of ceaseless rifle fire hy tho Government troops in the hope that the rebel defenders will exhaust their ammunition and yield continues around Nanking. There are unconfirmed reports that the Northerners captured the city. The ’German firm of Carlowitz, through its Hong Kong manager, who is a director of the Hong Kong-Shan-ghai .Bank, has offered the Governor of Yunnan three million sterling to construct the railway from Yunnanfu •a at ward to West River. Carlowitz, /who represents Krupp’s, also receives a twenty years’ monopoly of Government contracts for arms and ammunition and mining and other machinery.
