SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
monthly meeting. The monthly meeting of. the School Committee was held last night. Present; Messrs G. Smart (in the chair), E. W. Hancock, T. C. Eookcs, J. JStaples, J. W- Jones, and T. H, Penn (socretar>). VISITING COMMITTEE. The Visiting Committee reported; Wo beg to report that on visiting the school everything was found to be going on satisfactorily and the headmaster and caretaker had nothing to bring especially under the notice of the Committee. The asphalt in the yard has been repaired, and is now in good order. The firewood ordered, is being delivered and is of good quality. The caretaker is on the sick list, and under his doctor’s advice asks the Committee for leave of absence from Thursday next to Monday week, when the school re-opens after the holidays. The caretaker offers to provide substitutes to do his work during his absence to the satisfaction of the Committee. HEADMASTER’S REPORT. The Headmaster reported: I have to report that since your last meeting the attendance of the school has fallen off considerably. This was caused chiefly by the general sickness of children who had been'vaccinated and by a mild kind of influenza which has been prevalent among the little children. The caretaker, Mr Kivell, has been absent from his duties for a week through sickness. The asphalt between the two schools has been repaired and put in good order. Mr Hassell made a really good job of the work. The bathing season will probably open earlier than usual this year, and I should like the Committee to take in hand at once the improvements which they agreed to effect on the baths last year. The sanitary arrangements are essential. The Wellington schools football team has arranged to play a match with our boys hero on September 2nd. Tfle boys will arrive here on the Monday evening, and leave again on Wednesday morning. They will need to be bil leted out during those two days, and in this matter we.shall need the assistance of the members of the committee and supporters of iobtbiill in the district. Our difficulty in arranging for the accommodation of the boys arises chiefly from the fact that only four boys who live in the town are included in our representative football team. As the school concert was such a success financially, I beg to suggest that fhis year prizes be'given in the secondary as well as in' the pnihary department of this school. The cosft will bo, ,for the whole 'school,' about £3O. If the Committee agrees to this suggestion, it will be necessary for the local booksellers to have on hand a supply of. well-bound books f rom which selection" can be made, early in December. Iff my opinion the time has come when , properly bound and stamped !books should bo given,, as prizes to tho§o who, win, at least in the senior school, and I should like the Committee to consider the question. The school attendance yesterday was Gf3 and to-day 651. It is therefore once again up to its ordinary level. The question of the baths was held over till next meeting,, the Visiting Committee to present a report.—The teachers are to be asked to arrange accommodation for the visiting footr hall boys.—Local booksellers are to be asked for quotations for prize books stamped with the school arms. VISITING COMMITTEE. Messrs. Smart and Staples were appointed the Visiting Committee for the ensuing month.
