THE OREORE TRAGEDY.
ACCUSED GIRL DISCHARGED. [Pkh Press Association.] Palmerston N. August 19. At the Supreme Court to-day, the .mly ease heard by Sir Robert Stout van a charge against I’etc Tetua, c Maori woman, against whom a charge oi murder was preferred. The Grand Inry reduced tlie chaVge to one of muislaughter. The deed was committed at a. Maori pa inland from Rac :ihi. Tho victim was ai; an called Graham. Evidence was given that - Graham who had previously lived at the pa returned again to the Maori woman he had been living with, Hiiita Te •nata. Ho had made sundry threats ryute to the pa that ho would no’ bo seen again as tho police were after him for selling grog to tho Maoris The Maori witnesses stated that the;; did not want Graham in tho pa. Graham shot- his wife in the ear with r oca rifle. The, accused, Peti. was a sister of Graham’s wife. She came oi the scene, and, frenzied, seized a cross cut saw and struck Graham thrice on the head as lie was leaning over the dead woman. Each wound, said the doc tor, would have been sufficient t< cause death. ( After exhaustive evidence, Si> Robert Stout summed up in favor of Lite accused, who is a young stolidlooking Maori of fine type, stating that it was most reasonable to suppose that she feared that Graham would kill tho whole family. After a short retirement the jury returned - with a verdict of not guilty. Tho verdict was popularly received.
