CERTAIN SOCIAL EVILS.
DEPUTATION TO THE MINISTER. [Per Press 'Association.] Wellington, August IS. A deputation representing women's societies from different part:; of the Dominion waited on the Crime Minister to-day and brought under his notice- a series of resolutions adopted throughout the country, having for its object the remedying of certain social evils, the protection of women and children, raising the age of consent to 21 and the amendment of the law in other directions. It was suggested that the marriage ago for females be fixed at 16 and 18 for.males ;that farm colonies be provided for women who have borne two or more illegitimate children, and that some women visitors to gaols be appointed Justices of the Peace. Mr Massey said lie sympathised with tho resolutions generally and prom-; ir,ed to submit them to Cabinet with his recommendation that resolutions I be introduced, if possible, this session.
