The Alabama Legislature has appointed Henry Clayton a Senator, thus bringing the Democratic ranks up to the former majority. The Republicans claim that tho appointment is irregular. THE TARIFF BILL. (Received 9.5 a.m.) Washington, August 17. The Republican amendment to the TariiF Bill, seeking to raise the rates on fish, fruits, straw, apples, was defeated. The sugar schedule is the next for consideration, and a bitter fight is ahieipated.
