rain in the south. [Per Press Association.] Dunedin, August 14. A light drizzle all yesterday changed to heavy rain, accompanied by a south-easterly gale at night, and .97 inches of rain was registered till 9 p.m. and thereafter 2.40 inches. The flood in the Water of Leith is the heaviest since Christmas, 1911. The water rose to the level of the ,suspension, bridge. There is over two feet of water across knver Union Street at its junction with Lake Logan, and a score of residents had to seek refuge. The rain is now subsiding.
Traffic was delayed on the main rtoiith line hy washouts at Waihola and Clarkville, hut the express trains are expected to get through.
CARGO BROACHING. Auckland, August 13. Yesterday Constables Gourley and Nixon arrested William Price and William Huckle (quartermasters on the Delphic) and Arthur Burrell, an A. 8., on a charge of cargo broaching. They came before Mr F. V. Frazer, S.M., this morning, and admitted the theft. Mr J. R. London, who appeared for them, said that Price had a 26 years’ first-class discharge, and Huckle had a 16 years’ first-class discharge, while nil of Burrell’s discharges were firstclass. When the three got shore leave on the day previous to the theft, the Captain refused to supply them with money, and they returned with only sufficient drink to create a further thirst. The knowledge that there was whisky in the hold, and that the hatch cover was not securely locked, caused them to yield to temptation. His Worship said that it was a salutary rule of the Court never to deal with cargo-broaching by merely inflicting a fine. He would take into account that the men had good records and that they had freely confessed, and he would also give consideration to the attraction of the whisky for thirsty seamen. Accused ■would he convicted and sentenced to 14 days’ bard labor. ta-
