The Stratford Evening Post WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTLER. THURSDAY, AUGUST 14, 1913. THE CHANNEL TUNNEL.

The strenuous opposition which lias : prevailed in Britain for the past century against any sememe tor tunneling the Channel, is disappearing, and though only some thirty years ago the English Parliament vigorously negatived even discussing a proposal, the attitude to-day is quite properly different. There never lias been any sound reason why such a woik should not he undertaken, and it is now only a question of time before the tunnel is made. A week ago a deputation representing all sections of the Hons? of Commons waited upon Mr Asquith, in favour of carrying out the work, | which it was stated would cost ,-tIS.-: ■ 000,000, a sum which the deputation | urged would he readily subscribed | It was stated that the French Government was favourable, and it was argued that the tunnel would commit the; entente. Mr Asquith pointed out 1 that the reversal of repeated decisions [ could not lightly be undertaken, I though he agreed that there were factors which almost dissipated strategic objections, and flic Government I realised the importance ol an uuim- j

peded loud supply with the Cbntinejit. Mr Ascjuith laid stress on the

preservation of national security, oven at tho expense of keeping up the harriers to a free intercourse between such near neighbours as England and France. Eut with the great strides made in aviation surely such objections disappear.
