A BIG FLOOD IN INDIA.
MUCH DAMAGE AND LOSS OF LIFE. [By Electric Tbleoiuvh— Copybigjiv] [United Press ' Association.] Calcutta, August 11. Embankments collapsed owing to rains on the Damodar River, and a number of villages have boon des troyed. There was great loss of life. Bardwan is six feet under water. Of 30,000 inhabitants only 200 reached the railway station. A terrible loss of life is feared. The line is submerged for 15 miles cutting off communication; Miles of country are flooded, and thousands are homeless and starving. Houses were washed away and cattle destroyed.
TIMELY WARNING. (Received 9.40 a.in.) Calcutta, August 11. Timely warning enabled thousands to escape from Bat'd wan. Officials employed elephants to drive people to safety.
