RAILWAY OFFICERS’ INSTITUTE. [Per Press Association,]> Dunedin, August 10. The final meeting of the Railway Officers’ Institute was held to-day. The principal business was the election of officers, which resulted: President, J. Young (Christchurch); vicepresidents, A. H. O'Loughlin (Auckland, A. W. Hutchings (Wellington). C. P. Ryan (Wanganui), Kane (Dunedin), M. Angus (Invercargill). General treasurer, W. O. Ennis (Dunedin) ; executive committee, H. Thomas, G. Mathewson, G. A. Turner, N. Wallace, G. Griffiths (Dunedin), F. Finlayson (Green Island), and W ■ Marshall (Sawyer’s Bay).

A NEW RECORD. ' - Wellington, August 10. The ferry steamer Wahine, which arrived at Wellington 'at 8.15 till; morning established a new record for the run from Lyttelton wharf to Wellington wharf, by covering the distance of 173 miles in 9 hours 10 minutes, although she wafijgoi working at Y.id I power, two |boileiSi nbi being in fuse.

CLAIM FOR DAMAGES. Hastings, August 10. The bearing <& 4 S&Wf compensation, made by Sarah Hurst against the , Hastings Borough Council, for alleged depreciation in the value of her property in Eastbourne Street, caused by the election’'of the borough eletftric power .and pumping station on tbe adjoining section, was resumed this'morning before his Honor .the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout). After lengthy evidence had been taken, his Honor intimated that it had been suggested by the assessors, and he concurred, that the parties should endeavour to arrange a settlement by the council acquiring the pro-

perty at a figure fixed by the assessors. The course was agreed to, and ' the Court adjourned to inspect the property. On resuming, the Chie. Justice stated that it had been agreed that the council should purchase the property, and the price had been fixed by the assessors at £BSO, and the amount of compensation for disturbance £lO, the council also to pay.costs •amounting to £6O. The assessed fees were fixed at £8 Bs, each party to pay their, own asscssois.
