“DOUBLE” BETTING. Wellington, August.:?. Some interesting opinipii.s on, the ■abject of betting were pronounced in the) Hons© of Representatives last opening, when Mr Wilford V, Gaming ipiendment Bill was before the House. t Mr Wilford remarked that bookmakers made their living by “double” Setting and not by single betting. Mr Glover: I know It, Mr Wilford: If a “double” totalised’ were put on the racecourse the bookmakers’ occupation would be gone. The Hon. W. H. Herriee: Hear, Sear! i Mr Wilford said that the “double” machine had been dope away with because outsiders who knew nothing about it, thought that, it increased petting. Instead it had curtailed bet;ing. He believed , that, the racing clubs had done away with the “double” machine in order to get more revenue. i Mr Herries: Oh, no! A Melbourne cablegram states that Mr Hannah has presented Captain Jingle to D. J, Price, the ex-Now Zealand but. now Caulfield trainer.
