A DRUNKEN FREAK. [Per Press Association.] Hastings, August 6. Samuel Brag»o Towns, aged about 23, was committed for trial to-day on a charge of attempting to do grievioui bodily harm to Arthur Hilton. Towns and Hilton were partners in a farm at Twyford, and lived together. On Saturday night Towns returned from a drinking bout and assaulted Hilton, and threatened him with a loaded rifle, which he pointed at his stomach. Hilton seized the barrel and the gun went off, the shot lodging; in the fireplace. >| > < SHOOTING WITH INTENT. Pahiatua, August 6. William Clemens, a young man, and Mrs Ireland, a middle-aged woman, who were arrested ton a charge of shooting Fredenek Ireland, the husband of. the latter, at -Pukehinau, on Monday night, were brought in from Pongaroa by coach to-day, and on appearing at the local Magistrate's Court were remanded to appear at Dannevirke on the 13th inst. Accused, who were not represented by counsel, did not apply for bail, and will be lodged to-night, in the Palmerston North gaol. The accused and Ireland, it appears, had supper ott Monday night. about 9.30 at Ireland's house, and it was afterwards that the shooting was alleged to have taken place. Clemens had been staying with Ireland for about a week. MAORIS AND A POST-MORTEM. Carterton, August 7. There was nearly a riot in the Hurunui-Orangi pa at Gladstone yesterday afternoon, when the Natives objected to a post-mortem on Pita Kuwana, who died suddenly on Tuesday night. There were two factions, one willing to allow the examination, a4id the other against it. The latter wanted to remove the body to the Teorore pa, Masterton, but the other section refused point blank, and for a time it looked as if a serious outbreak would occur. Finally the counsel of Unurakau Maika and Ngatuere prevailed, and after a meeting lasting three hours ii> was decided to allow 'tlie post-mortem and cleave the body! at Hurunui-Orangi. The examinalion is to be held at 12.30.
