THE OIL TRUST.

A report circulated a few weeks ago iiiKew York states that the Standard 6il,Tnist)is.tp hare a-powerful competitor.; :sso -less:.-an(interest.-than that of Messrs;; Rothschild,-, ofH ?s to. be jengaged in ,aa effort to -destroy its ..practical, monopoly.; in the tTnited! .States,; - and to fight it- in Mexico and the world [at large. This fight is to be made, it is stated, through the"'Waters Pierce'Oil Company, which a few years ago, before the! dissolution .of the Oil Trust, was one of the important marketing companies of the Trust, and has the exclusive sale of Standard Oil products lin the south-western United States and in Mexico. It was the direct competitor in Mexico of the Mexican Eagle Oil Company presided over by Lord Cowdray. Since the dissolution of the Trust the Waters Pierce Compny has become a separate organisation. It is now stated that Messrs Rothschild have joined the Henry Clay Pierce, and will raise the Company's present capital of £BO,OOO to £2,000,000, and that war will be declared. The Pierce people are reputedly strong in Mexico, while they have retained a considerable portion of their old business in Texas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. The fight will, it is considered, undoubtedly begin by the establishment of rival depots alongside those of the Trust and cutting Ipi prices. The public stand to gain in

this fight, but the losses to the rival companies will be very great. Millions of pounds are sunk, and ,the commercial world will watch the struggle with the keenest interest.
