The victims had died from afterdamp. Macdonald, the last man reached, was found alive after 19 hours. A doctor administered oxygen while he was being carried out in a critical condition. One woman lost three sons, and another two sons and a son-in-law. Thirteen victims were married.
HEART-RENDING SCENES. London, August 4. There were heart-rending scenes at the pit head at Cadder. The poisonous fumes rendered rescue difficult and rescuers were at times unconscious.
