[ Walter Shaw, solicitor, lately become 'bankrupt, was arrested to-day for alleged wrongful conversion of trust monies.
1 MUNICIPAL ENTERPRISE. Wellington, July 30. j The proposal of the Eastbourne Borough Council to borrow £13,000 for I the purchase of ferry steamers was submitted to a poll of ratepayers today and carired by 276 votes to 33.
A VISITANT FROM SPACE
Wairoa, July 30
At a quarter to eleven this morning, a huge meteorite broke and fell jinto a gully near the lake house at [Waikaremoana. It caused quite an illumination all round, accompanied by a terrific noise. Parties are out trying to locate the vigitaut from space.
A LICENSING CASE
Wellington, July 30
I A point arising out of a perjury case I was decided by the Court of Appeal jto-day. The facts u ere that Samuel ; Francis Aitkin was found guilty of I falsely swearing that he was married when he applied for a publican’s 'license. The Chief Justice reserved |for the Appeal Courts decision the !question whether the magistrate who heard ithe application, under section 185 of the Licensing Act, acted in a judicial capacity, sentence being deferred in the interim. The Court held that the magistrate had not acted in a judicial capacity, and quashed the conviction.
“BEER AND THE BIBLE.”
Wellington, July 30
A post card having been circulated referring to the subjects “Beer and the Bible,” which might cause people to suppose that the Temperance Party was responsible for this production, occasioned the calling of a speial meeting of the New Zealand Alliance Executive to-day, at which the following resolution was adopted:—“That this executive repudiates any responsibility for an illustrated’rpost card circulated dealing with ?the 'two: '.questions of Prohibition and Bible-in-Schools, and: purporting to be. issued by a supporter of both movements.! Relieving that it is essential to the success of the Prohibit!om movement that it shall be kept entirely distinct from .every other issue, the executive strongly urges upon friends of the cause to exercise the; utmost care 'in. maintaining this distinction.”
