CHARLOTTE BRONTE.

The British Museum has acquired four letters of Charlotte. Bronte to Professor Heger, who was the Paul Emanuel of “ViletteThey prove that the suggested scandal attaching to Charlotte Bronte is untrue. The jitters are in French, dated July and October, 1844, and January and November, 1845. They display warm gratitude to him as her literary master, together with a passionate protest against his grudging acceptance of her devotion. The letters suggest, that “Vilette” was written to justify herself and Professor Heger.
POLICEMAN RUNS AMOK
London, July 28,
McCarney, a demented policeman in Londonderry Barracks, stationed himself on the stairs with a rifle and wounded two constables, one dangerously, and then fled partly dressed into the • streets and wounded several civilians. Eighty police are surrounding the brickfield where McCarney is hiding, well supplied with ammunition. (Received 9.20 a.m.) Londonderry and the country side is terrorised by the failure to capture McCarney, who took refuge in a spot honey-combed with subterranean passages.

GIFT TO THE KAISER

Knorr is the name of tho Saxon landowner who has bequeathed his property, the estimated value of which is £150,000, to the Kaiser, to be used in strengthening the army and navy. His widow, who is practically disinherited, is disputing tho will.

The case of Havelock Wilson (secretary of tho Seamen’s and Firemen’j. Union) v. the Shipping Federation, has concluded, tho verdict being for the defendants. Evidence for the defence denied any attempt to smash Wilson. , , .
