The British Museum has acquired four letters of Charlotte. Bronte to Professor Heger, who was the Paul Emanuel of “ViletteThey prove that the suggested scandal attaching to Charlotte Bronte is untrue. The jitters are in French, dated July and October, 1844, and January and November, 1845. They display warm gratitude to him as her literary master, together with a passionate protest against his grudging acceptance of her devotion. The letters suggest, that “Vilette” was written to justify herself and Professor Heger.
