Sergeant-Major Collins returned or Saturday'night from the "refresher' camp in Palmerston.

The Hon. J. W. Sauer, Minister of Railways for United South Africa since 1910, whose death was announced last week, was the son of a magistrate of Orange Free State. He was educated in South Africa, and practiced in Aliwal North, Cape Colony, as a solicitor. He entered Parliament 37 years ago as a follower of Sir Gordon Sprigg, and was Secretary for Native Affairs in 1881-84. He was Colonial Secretary under Mr Rhodes in 1893, and was then in'Opposition until 1891. He was returned as a hlember of the first Union Parliament, and has held office ever since.

Large framed photographs of the late Mr Setldon and of Sir Joseph Ward have been presented to the trustees of the Auckland Trader, Hall by Mr E. Gallichan, of Wellington. The erection of the hall was facilitated by the assistance of Sir Joseph Ward in securing a State loan of £6OOO, and when he opened the building a year ago the trustees expressed* a desire to possess a portrait of Sir Joseph. Photographs of the Liberal Premiers were obtained by Mr Oallichan, and in acknowledging an expression of the trustees' gratitude he said he would endeavour to provide companion pictures of Sir George Grey and Mr John Ballance.

A large gathering of men employed on ■ the 'Mount Egmont railway assembled at the barracks on Saturday evening to welcome back Mr G. W. Albert-son, the assistant engineer in charge of works, after his recent i arriage. A presentation of a dinner set Was made to Mr Albertson during the evening, and a smoke concert was was held. Songs, recitations, etc., were given by members of the company, and the concert broke up before midnight, when it was vnanimously voted to have been most successful. A special vote of thanks was passed to Mr Boilglas for the piijiitaking and successful manner in which he carried: the arrangements to a successful issue.
