EX-KING MANUEL.
Referring to Ex-King Manuel an English paper remarks that recently at Richmond he was seen, entirely alone but for the private-detective who always accompanies him, not in the least at his request hut at that of the English authorities, entering one of the local kinernatograph houses which “presented” the various Derby incidents. It is much debated in Richmond whether the Portuguese royalties will continue to occupy the rather modest abode they have lived in since the revolution, after the King’s marriage. They have endeared themselves to the local tradespeople and others. Queen Amelie, for instance, invariably invites the very small daughter of the local French pastrycook who supplies the Court to the children’s party she gives once a year. There is, of course, quite a colony at Richmond of Portuguese families who have followed the Royal family into exile. The Grand Chamberlain, Count Figuero, and his wife are elderly peo-
pie, otherwise the Household consists mostly of young people, and a rather bright and festive air is imparted to the royal borough of Richmond by the influx of gay and chattering foreigners, who, in a manner quite unknown to our more sober country, throng the streets in family parties. King Manuel and Queen Amelie are to be seen every Sunday at the local Catholic church, and hold a small reception immediately afterwards. Queen Amelie leads an almost' retired life, but the young King goes out a good deal. He is, however, studious, and is devoted to music and an excellent performer on the piano and organ. His future the young Princess Victoria, who is-almost as greatly beloved by the German people as their own recently married Princess, shares his tastes.
