President Wilson’s project to institute a protection and supervision over Nicaragua was favorably received in the Senate, the Foreign Relations Committee supporting the policy. The nature of the control proposed to ho exercised by the United States of America does not bind the latter country to any obligation to pay Nicaragua’s debts. it is likely, however, that the increased commercial stability resulting from American control will soon place Nicaragua on a sounder financial basis.
It is understood that the Republicans in the Senate are not likely to offer opposition, so the scheme is likely to pass. Considerable feeling will probably lie engendered amongst the South American republics, who jealously regard any expansion of tho United States’ powers.
