TEACHERS’ UNION

The Imperial Union of Teachers has been inaugurated. Messrs Goldie [Sydney), Irwin and Blanch (Melbourne), Glad man (West Australia), and Smith (New Zealand) participated. Mr Goldie advocated an interchange of teachers.

HANDSOME BEQUESTS

The estate of the late Mr Fry, cocoa manufacturer, was proved at £700,000. Testator bequeathed £52,000 to foreign missions, £47,000 to hospitals, and £43,000 to charities, as well as providing legacies for all employees with five years’ service to their credit. ACCIDENT TO BATTLESHIP. Several thousand pounds worth of damage was done to the battleship Exrnoubh through the fusing of a switchboard which caused a fire. Three of the after magazines were flooded, and the electrical equipment was destroyed. The flooding caused the vessel to take the ground, but she was refloated.

CENTENARY OF BIRMINGHAM

A largo gathering of leading business men celebrated the centenary of Birmingham in the Chamber of Commerce, among those present being the Agents-General. An inaugural meeting was held in the Town Hall, at which Sir George Reid was the chief speaker. He outlined the remarkable advance Birmingham and the Empire had made during that period.
