Forty miners were killed in a fire in n sulphur mine at San Ciovanelh, Sicily. A heap of bodies was found at the pit bottom where tfte men fought for places for the chance of life. Many survivors walked underground three miles to safety, and others cut a passage adjacent to the mine.
