A MISSIONARY DROWNED

'"'' Island; 'news' states that the Rev. Charles'Sage, -of the Melanesian Mis sion at the Solomon Islands, wa; drowned on June 7 by the capsizing of the mission launch in a squall. Deceased was a native of Victoria, and was ordained at Norfolk Island it April last. Ho had previously don< fifteen years' mission work in Melane m\ and elsewhere.

A poor widow, ignorant of racing entrusted a youth who, Svas going t< the recent Flemington races, with c sovereign to invest, ten shilling to go on each of two rank outsiders. The wo man learning from a newspaper tha. both had won, becamo so excited that she was seized with a fit an< died. The irony of it all lies in the fact that the widow's son met tlu youth at the races and persuaded the youth to invest the widow's monei on the favourites, and both lost.

The secretary of the Health De partment declares that one death oui of twelve in Westralia is due to souk form of tuberculosis.
